I want to know the reason of growing terrorism and extremism in the world.

It’s not poverty — the 9/11 hijackers were middle class, and the guy that recently attacked the CIA outpost in Afghanistan was a doctor.

Ideology has a lot to do with it, but it’s important to realize what gave those violent ideologies their power: totalitarian dictatorships in the Middle East.

Years ago, these totalitarian regimes (especially Saudi Arabia) tried to quell dissent and distract attention from their behavior, by funding religion en masse. (As Karl Marx once famously remarked, "religion is the opiate of the masses".) Remember that the Wahhabi Islam sect that’s responsible for al-Qaeda was nurtured by Saudi Arabia’s government. Until the Saudis started funding religion, their government was the only power structure in that nation; after a while, Wahhabi Islam was well-funded and well-entrenched enough to become a second seat of power. Once they had power, they turned their attention to the real source of trouble in their lives — their totalitarian governments.

Fighting those was al-Qaeda’s original reason for being. Then, because the U.S. made deals with these dictatorships in order to secure oil supplies, we became a target.

This means that George W. Bush’s invasion of Iraq, even though it was very badly done, was a stroke of tactical genius. Iraq’s previous totalitarian government is toast, and the only one that wants to see the new Iraqi government fail is the Baath party in Syria. (al-Qaeda has moved on to Afghanistan.) Keep in mind that Saddam Hussein’s Baath party controlled two nations, Iraq and Syria, and Syria has not been held accountable yet. Nearly all of the continuing terrorist attacks in Iraq are rooted in Syria.

Unfortunately, it’ll be several years before the wisdom of invading Iraq becomes obvious. Until then, George W. Bush will have to settle for being slandered now and vindicated later, much like Harry S Truman.

I need help! I am looking for weatherstripping around the casement window crank, not the actual window. The rubberized stripping that is there is pulling out and crumbling, and apparently the window maker is republic, who are out of business. Anyone have any ideas of where I can go or any other options?

capitalism is cooperative. In order for me to get what I want, I have to give you what you want. All voluntary transactions are mutually beneficial, or they wouldn’t occur.

Let’s see. Abraham Lincoln had minimal experience as an elected Captain in the Illinois militia for about two months, and led us through the Civil War.

Woodrow Wilson never served and led us through WWI.

Franklin Roosevelt couldn’t have served due to polio, and led America the the brink of victory in World War II.

Harry S. Truman served as an artillery Captain in WWI, and finished WWII and stood up to defend democracy in Korea.

Dwight D. Eisenhower was career military and probably the most boring president ever.

John F. Kennedy served in WWII as a PT Boat commander, and got us involved in Vietnam.

Lyndon Johnson never served, and escalated Vietnam while imposing ridiculous rules of engagement.

George H.W. Bush served as a Navy fighter pilot in WWII and is probably best known for listening to his generals in planning Desert Storm.

His son didn’t listen to anyone. He was an Air National Guard pilot. Allegedly.

The current President never served, but seems to be listening to experts when it comes to defense issues.

I’ve left out Presidents who didn’t deal with major wars. Carter was a Navy submariner, Reagan and Army Reservist who made movies, and Nixon had an interesting career in uniform.

The short answer is it’s the man, and how he takes advice from experts. I spent 23 years in uniform, serving in combat and advisory roles around the world. Doesn’t make me the man to talk to about deploying a carrier battle group and a MEU.

I am trying to think of a few different ways to display the greek letters other that the usual right across the front of the chest. I already have a jacket with them going vertically up one side next to the zipper and a am planning on doing a shirt with the letters running horizontally like usual, but the rest of the word spelled out beneath it, with the greek symbol being the first letter of the word. Any more ides would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

My friend’s father died recently. Twenty years ago, her father took out a small life insurance policy to pay for his funeral expenses. The beneficiary is my friend’s stepmother. The stepmother doesn’t even recall a life insurance policy. She wonders if he had cashed it out. How can my friend find out if a life insurance policy still exists? Those unclaimed fund sites don’t usually include life insurance policies, and the life insurance company may not know that a death has occurred.

There is no central database for information on life policies going back this far, i.e. the MIB (Medical Information Bureau) only keeps records on life insurance applications going back 11 years. However, I do have a few suggestions 1) check his financial records–cancelled checks, bank statements, the attic, the basement for old boxes of records, etc. 2) check at the bank and see if he had a safe deposit box 3) check at work and see if he had a policy there 4) check with his auto & home insurance agent and see if he had the policy through that agent or if that agent recommended someone to him 5) check with the family attorney he might have told him/her while preparing his will 6) check with the accountant he might have told him while asking questions about the tax implications of a policy or maybe the accountant referred him to an agent and 7) if nothing else you would have to call up the companies to check–be forewarned though this is a lot of work. First get a list of the licensed life insurance carriers in your state from the Insurance Commissioner and then try to call the most well known first. Make sure you have his social security number, date of birth and full name on hand prior to making these calls and realize that in the entire U.S. there are over 1800 life insurance companies–of course there might be far fewer in your state but it will still be like looking for the proverbial needle in a haystack. Sorry.

I know that ancient Rome was key but there was a situation that they were trying to specifically avoid.
