Arrest at G20 Demonstrations, September 24, 2009
An snatch and grab arrest was made on a side street near Baum Ave & S Millvale Ave. during a protest against the Pittsburgh G20 Summit. Word is that the arrests were made by PA State Troopers who were wearing camouflage clothing.
People have been demonstrating to counter the G20, a group of the richest, most powerful people from the richest, most powerful countries who make decisions which impact all of us. The past few times they have met they decided to bail out big banks, including the biggest, baddest bank of them all, the International Monetary Fund (IMF), which does nothing to help people. In addition, G20-style globalization policies have harmed the environment and threatened democracy everywhere.

How did the British Government controlled the terrorism of IRA bombers?
UN and may Muslim countries are cooperating in war against terrorism but it is still not under control even after 8 years or so. Why can’t the measures that British took to control the insurgency in Ireland succeed against Alquida and Taliban?
There are two problems with your question…
First, it misses the length of the Irish insurgency. The modern IRA was founded Nov. 25, 1913. It lead the Easter Rising in 1916 and eventually forced the creation of the Republic of Ireland in 1921. In the agreement between Irish leaders and the English Empire, 26 southern counties formed the Republic of Ireland while six mostly Protestant counties formed Northern Ireland and remained under British rule. From that date forward, the IRA fought a terrorist and guerrilla war against England and its Protestant allies. The war was sporadic until the late 1960s, when the IRA fought a civil war in Northern Ireland against Protestant militias and the English army.
But, even if we are talking about the process that brought peace to Northern Ireland, it wasn’t something that happened overnight. The process started with overtures from both sides in the early 1990s. After years of talking and negotiating, including the efforts of former U.S. Senator George Mitchell, the IRA, England and Protestant parties signed the Good Friday agreement April 10, 1998. The agreement called for a unified cabinet of Catholic and Protestant members, an elected assembly and a number of agencies and committees staffed by representatives from the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland to handle cross-border issues such as tourism. Over 70 percent of the population of Northern Ireland voted in favor of the accord and nearly 95 percent of the Republic of Ireland voted for the accord. And, so we had peace in Northern Ireland….
Not even close. Those elements of the IRA who opposed the agreement slowed the IRA’s compliance, particularly in disarmament, with the agreement for years. It took nine years for the IRA to fully implement the agreement and peace to return to the Irish Isles.
So, we have a conflict that goes from 1913 to a peace agreement in 1998 to implementation nine years later. By this timeline, we will have an agreement with al-Qaeda 2086 and implementation in 2095.
The second issue is that you are talking about two parties, in Britain and the IRA, that had something they could negotiate about. The issue, from 1921 onward, was about control of the northern six counties in Ireland. Eventually England and the IRA worked out a compromise that satisfied both parties. England maintained rule over Northern Ireland, but the IRA gained significant political power in the six counties.
However, in the fight against fundamental Muslims and the West, I don’t see a basis for compromise. In Islam, there are three jihads. There is the personal jihad of the Muslim against personal evil desires. There is the internal jihad among Muslims to purify Islamic society. This jihad can be peaceful, but is often violent pitting Muslims against Muslims, with one group considering the other as heretical. The third jihad is the external jihad against infidels and this jihad is nearly always violent. The conflict between al-Qaeda/the Taliban and the West is the third type of jihad. And, generally, these jihads are ended only with the conversion of the infidel (e.g. the West) or the crushing of the jihadists (e.g al-Qaeda).
Al-Qaeda considers Western culture, and U.S. culture in particular, to be the exact antithesis to the Muslim ideal. I really don’t see these fundamentalist militants accepting something they see as extremely hostile to the core, foundational tenets of Islam. And, you can argue about all the other moderate Muslims you want to, but the fact remains that al-Qaeda has rejected the moderate arguments and considers many of the Imams that make these arguments as, at best, compromisers with the enemies of Islam or, at worst, heretics. We are talking about core, foundational values that are non-negotiable. Where Britain could find some middle ground with the IRA, since the IRA was willing to move off their core value of a unified Ireland, I don’t believe that we can find middle ground with al-Qaeda, since al-Qaeda is not willing to move off their core values.
So, then, unless Western women find a sudden desire to wear the burka and stay inside all day and we outlaw such things as alcohol, music and pornography and convert to Islam, then there is little chance of peace between the two groups. Further, the very nature of terrorism, the nature that it only takes small groups of less than a dozen people to carry out attacks, means that we will always be confronted with unreasonable people. And, al-Qaeda may be sincere in their beliefs, but they are unreasonable in that they demand that others conform to their beliefs.
So those are two reasons why I don’t think there will be a negotiated settlement with al-Qaeda in the near future.

How do we get capitalism to provide enough jobs again so that government does not have to protect us?
Most people realize that our government would not have to spend if capitalism was providing enough jobs. That is the point of the stimulus plans, to protect the citizens. Now we can argue that the stimulus plan should of not been used and capitalism should of just failed to expose the problems with the system itself. But my heart and morals can`t just make me walk up to my neighbor and say you can`t go back to work with stimulus money because we have to prove a point.
By regulating it.
Can a company representative come to your house and demand you return something?
So, I’m 16, and my mom and I were renting an Alto Sax from Playground Music. My mom had not paid for 3 or 4 months because we were running low on money. A company representative came to our door and basically demanded that we return the instrument. They gave us no notice about this and demanded we return it tomorrow (Saturday). Now, are they allowed to come to our house like that?
Yes.
