Why do some people insist that capitalism is the best way to distribute goods and services?

When I hear libertarians, objectivists and capitalists talk about the economy, I sense an assumption that capitalism is the only way to go?

I question that assumption.

I think cooperative measures can work just as well as competitive measures.

Capitalism is cooperative. In order for me to get what I want, I have to give you what you want. All voluntary transactions are mutually beneficial, or they wouldn’t occur.

Because "some people" like me have studied and understand economics.

Ask yourself this, sport. The vast, vast majority of transactions that go off in an average day happen without government involvement. You buying a gallon of milk at the grocery store? That’s there for you because you want it and someone wants to sell it to you, no government needed.

Starting to make sense now? You understanding the whole self interest thing now?

Capitalism isn’t the only way to go, but it is the only successful way to go when compared to others. God bless.

To many, capitalism and democracy are one and the same.
It’s strange how they bob and weave to make that sound true, but it isn’t.
We are in the middle of a huge object lesson about the dangers of unregulated capitalism. We’ve seen it before, and if we survive this, we’ll see it again unless we as a nation wake up and stop chanting slogans and really think, for a change.

    Because people confuse three things:

    1. free markets.

    2. hierarchical firms.

    3. government favoritism towards big business.

Obviously, #1 places competitive limits on #2, and is completely incompatible with #3. Right now, we have #2 and #3.

Actually, free markets work fairly well.

For example, market competition broke the Standard Oil monopoly before the regulators got involved. Market competition kept health care costs down until the American Medical Association appealed to Congress to keep unions from hiring doctors.

And competition is also cooperation. For example, competition between suppliers is cooperation between suppliers and customers. And cooperation between workers allows competition between workers and bosses.

cooperative measures can work just as well so long as they are VOLUNTARY. WITHOUT IT BEING VOLUNTARY, this is slavery. I hope you understand the difference my friend. Capitalism is the only system that allows freedom. NOthing else. Capitalism is the VOLUNTARY exchange between individuals or GROUPS for the betterment of both parties, but the key word here is VOLUNTARY.
