“Untitled participatory”

Posted on June 4th, 2010 by admin in participatory | No Comments »

This is a documentation of a participatory work directed by Mark Cameron Boyd and performed by members of his “Graduate Collaborative Studio” class. Each performer was required to transcribe one continuous line of poetry as read aloud by Casey Smith. Phrases were written so that the edge of the tape bisected the words. Writers were organized by height in correspondence to six parallel strips of masking tape on the blackboard:

“After the performance, the audience is invited to now join with the Writers in deciphering the now bisected text; to complete the words. All white chalk is removed and BLUE chalk is provided for text deciphering.

What was only moments before written by their own hands has become a mystery for the Writers; words recently heard now are illegibly bisected and also fading from memory. Memory and visual acuity must be employed to help both the Writers and the audience to complete the bisected text. The inherent illegibility of bisected text is also further complicated by the brief snatches of words hastily scribbled that have become partial phrases. Additionally, since multiple participants wrote the words and phrases, visual recognition is also impaired by the juxtaposition of multiple handwriting styles. Fragmentation, juxtaposition and text-bisection all meld together to make a kind of poetic discourse about the act of comprehension itself.”

Sershul Monastery Part 2 (Participatory Video – Tibetan)

Posted on May 11th, 2010 by admin in participatory | 1 Comment »

This short participatory video was planned and filmed by a team of videographers from Sershul Monastery. It was later edited by project facilitator Tsering Perlo.

BACKGROUND

Home to 1300 monks, Sershul Monastery is the largest Gelug monastery in Kham, and the religious center of Zachukha County — the highest, largest, poorest, coldest, and most remote county in Sichuan Province.

Sershul was established in 1760. Many of the buildings were destroyed during the Cultural Revolution, but have since been rebuilt. It is home to numerous important relics, including a tooth belonging to Tsongkhapa, founder of the Gelug Order.

In September 2007, Triwa Rinpoche (acting head of Sershul Monastery) assembled a team of the monasterys resident videographers to work with facilitators from the Kham Film Project. The participants filmed an overview of Sershul Monastery, depicting its history and important landmarks. The resulting short film was edited by project facilitator Tsering Perlo, assisted by Nelson Walker and Lynn True.

Participatory Research is a methodology responding to the principals of Liberation and Transformation. The foundation of Participatory Research is the acknowledgment that all human beings are capable of knowledge. It challenges the belief that research should be conducted only by specialists and recognizes that research should be part of everyone’s life. In this dialogue, Alma Flor Ada and Paulo Freire share ideas about Participatory Research as developed based on Paulo’s principals of Critical Education.
