What relations does Somalia have with its former colonies?

Posted on May 8th, 2010 by admin in relations | 2 Comments »

Somalia italiana was a colony of the Kingdom of Italy from the 1880s until 1941 and the same with Britain and France. So..what relations do they have now? Do Somalis get like citizenship to their Italy, Britain, and France now?

Are there any good relations between these countries other then pirate problems? Is there any brotherhood felt between their people and/or legislation?

From the 1940s until the civil war broke out, there were still Somalis who watched Italian films in the cinemas in the southern regions of Somalia and some still spoke Italian. There were also still some Italians living in these regions of Somalia. Lately though, I don’t think there are many Somalis at all in Italy, there are more in the UK. It’s still very difficult for Somalis in Somalia to get citizenship anywhere, whether it’s the UK or Italy or the US.

France colonized only Djibouti, not modern-day Somalia, so I don’t really know much about that region and I’m more familiar with Italian-colonized Somalia. I don’t think there are good relations between the countries. Somalis have great pride and fought bitterly against the colonialists. I don’t see why there would be good relations. That’s not to say that Somalis hate Italy or Italians or Brits or the UK. I know many Somalis who enjoyed their time in Italy and who had good Italian friends. One of my uncles is named after his father’s good Italian friend. I only mean that there doesn’t seem to be a special relationship between Italy as a country and Somalia or the UK and Somalia.
