What are the advantages and disadvantages of a democracy vs a republic?

I’ve heard that the U.S. constitution forms a republic whereas Thomas Jefferson had a democracy in mind. What is wrong with democracy? The ignorance of the masses? Isn’t a republic just an indirect democracy?
Wow. Looks like I hit a nerve with this question. It might be too volatile a subject to get a straight, unbiased answer. Which means there probably isn’t one.

A republic is democracy…its a form of democracy. The term republic means essentially a democracy that is led by one man…the president who we all know is elected to be the leader by the people to represent them..just like congress is elected by the people to represent them. Notice how the term represent keeps coming up? ever heard of the term representative democracy?

is the light bulb beginning to light up???

By the way, I am willing to bet cash money that the first answer is a Republican by the answer he gave. why? because his answer tries to deny that the USA is a democracy and that even democracies are actually a bad thing. I bet also that he supported Bush spreading democracy in the mideast via war…that was ok by him I am sure…even though democracy according to him is a bad thing. The reason he hates democracy and does not want us to know we are a democracy is because he is really a fascist and fascist believe that the few should control the many….

i’m only going to answer this question this way, democracy=mob rule, just take a look at all the countries that don’t have a republican form of government, they are total failures. i will go no further w/this…you can do your own research.

The U.S. is no longer a democracy or a republic anyway. it is a corporatistic government, meaning large interest groups decide who gets elected, not the people.
